Hello dear friends of the Juan Sisay Spanish School! This is the first Newsletter we send to you and the very first thing we want to do in this Newsletter is to say thank you for your interest in the School, in Xela and in Guatemala! You receive this Newsletter because you subscribed on one of the schools homepages (either www.juansisay.com or www.juansisay.de) or are a known friend of the school. If you want to unsubscribe from this Newsletter just reply to it (using the same email-address, you used for subscribing) and change the subject to "unsubscribe". Content: 1. New coordinator 2. New coordinator The school has a "nueva coordinadora", Deanna Eberle is from the US and will join the folks at the school for some weeks. She has been a student at Juan Sisay before and therefore knows the school from this point of view also. Bienvenidos otra vez at Juan Sisay! 2. Some teachers have left the school Celso Cotom is now working with a protestant college, Rene Lopez finished university and is now making an internship as a agricultural engineer. And last but not least Alexandra Sutuc finished her studies at university with a diploma in psychologies. 3. New teachers Not really a new teacher in the school is Verónica Coyoy. She worked at Juan Sisay some years ago and in the meantime in the Financial Department in the capital. She is also member of the collective. But these are really new teachers: -Juan Galicia, 25 years. He studies agricultural engineer in his fifth year at the "Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala". -Gabriel Alonzo, 23 years. He studies "Fitotecnia" in the third year at the "Universidad Rafael Landivar". -Julio Obando, 20 years. Since two years he studies tourism at the "Universidad Rafael Landivar". 4. "Educación para los Niños" On the 5th of October we celebrated the "Dia del Niño" which took place on the 1st of October in Guatemala. We invited the kids from our project "Educación para los Niños". We offered games, presents and a dinner for them. We also could give them pencils, sweets and - far more important - vitamins, which some of our students brought to Guatemala. A lot of children in Guatemala do not have the possibility to get high quality food like meat, milk or eggs regularly. If you want to find more information about the unpleasant situation of children in Guatemala you can have a look at the UNICEF site about Guatemala: http://www.unicef.org/statis/Country_1Page69.html. 5. "Ingles para los Niños" On the 30th of October the last English class of this year took place for the kids of this project. Right now they have holidays... See you again next year! 6. Terror against the US The association of Spanish Schools in Quetzaltenango (A.C.E.E.Q.) in which Juan Sisay is a member hold a ecumenical service to show our friendship and solidarity with the people in the US. They travelled nearly all over the world. You can read the diary, see great pictures (especially about Xela and the School - http://2goglobal.com/2GoChronicals/2%20Go%20Photos/Central%20America/guatemala_2001.htm). Due to a lot of pictures the site takes pretty long to load, but it is worth it: *** http://www.lonelyplanet.com/: You know the Lonely Planet Guide Books, but not the website? You should! Very good structured, lots of information and friendly folks in the thorn tree! If you need to know how to get from here to there avoiding this while seeing that: somebody will know how to manage even that: **** http://members-americas.tripod.com/xelajuj/xelaradio.htm: Xela radio website with news about the local soccer team (the Superchivos), Xela and Guatemala: * http://www.cerveceria.com.gt/: If you have ever been in Guatemala and if you are a regular beer drinker (as I am) you will like Gallo, Moza, etc. And this is the brewery's website: ** OK, that's it for the moment. If you have any comments do not hesitate to write me an eMail. Hasta pronto, Andreas
