Cobán, founded in 1538, is located in the department Alta Verapaz. This is one of the regions that was most affected by the civil war in Guatemala.
Because of rich crops of coffee, sugarcane, and cardamon, the city flourished and was home to many German immigrants.
Places of interest include the Plaza, the Cathedral, the Calvario, the chapel of the local cemetery, and the orchid plantation of Otto Mittelstaedt with more than 700 varieties (Address: Diagonal 4, Zona 2).
