Guatemala City

The City

Guatemala City is the capital and has been the center of the economy and the polical seat of Guatemala. It is known as being congested, dirty and somewhat unsafe. Some places of interest include the Palacio Nacional, the Catedral Metropolitana, the Palacio Episcopal, the Mercado Central in Zona 1 and more.

Additional Information

The airport La Aurora is located 20 minutes from downtown and several major airlines fly there, like KLM, Continental-Airlines, American-Airlines, Delta-Airlines, Iberia and others. This is also the major domestic airport.

After you quickly pass through customs and baggage claim, a taxi can be taken to downtown. You can purchase taxi vouchers from a desk in the lobby for 70 Quetzales or the same amount in US-Dollars.

We recommend one of the following hotels in the capital, which all offer pick-up-service from the airport:

Average travelling time is about 4 hours. It is said that Alamo offers the better service with newer buses. We recommend not to travel at night, which means not taking buses leaving after 3 p.m. Price for a one way trip is around 45 Quetzales (as of May 2006).

There are also a lot of the famous Camionetas or Chicken-Buses serving the route Quetzaltenango - Guatemala like the rest of the country. They are authentically Guatamalan, but they are not recommended for "Guatemala Beginners".
