The department of Huehuetenango is in the northwest of Guatemala and is the fourth biggest in the country. It is a two hour bus ride from Quetzaltenango. The Spanish conquered the area in 1526 after much difficulty.
The area still maintains a lively tradition. People dress in indigenous clothes and six native languages are spoken. Over 150 varieties of corn are grown. This is one of the most disadvantaged regions in Guatemala with a high rate of illiteracy and poor medical service.
The climate is pleasant and the landscape rivals the Swiss Alps.
Places of interest include the Ruins of Zaculeu, the former capital of the kingdom of the Mam. The ruins are located four km from the city. In the city are other points of interest including the Palacio Municipal, the Cathedral and the building of the Gobernación Depertamental.

There are also a lot of the famous Camionetas or Chicken-Buses serving Huehuetenango. They leave frequently from the local bus terminals.
