Banks

There are banks in all major cities, for example the Banco de Guatemala and the Banco Industrial change US-Dollars (please take care that you have dollar bills without rips or tears) and Traveller Checks, or you can withdraw money with your credit card.

Bargaining On the market

Bargaining is always common, but as a tourist you might pay more than the locals.

Credit Cards

Credit Cards are accepted in the majority of shops, restaurants and hotels. The most common ones are VISA-, EURO- or MASTER-Card.

Food

The typical Guatemalan diet does not offer a wide variety of food. In spite of this there are some very unique cuisines to discover. But be careful eating from street vendors as not all of them are clean.

Guidebooks

There are a wide variety of excellent guidebooks available. I use the Lonely Planet and I am very happy with it. If you are looking for other ones, you'll find some hints [here].

Security tips
  • Make two photocopies of your documents. Leave one at home and take one with you while travelling. Have the number to cancel your credit card available.
  • Take a taxi or walk with friends at night.
  • Beware of pickpockets.
  • Do not take tours like volcano trips on your own. Hire a guide.

Taxis

Taxis are more expensive than buses. To take a taxi within the city center of Quetzaltenango, for example, will be about 25 or 30 Quetzales.

Telephone

Do not use TELGUA for non-domestic calls, it is too expensive. There are a lot of private services which are cheaper. For national directory enquiries call 121, for international ones, call 171. As a lot of internet cafes today have cable connections, Voice over IP (for example Skype) is also available in some places.

Tourist Information

Tourist Information is available in all bigger cities, but the quality of information varies. Normally you will always find other tourists with adequate information.

Travel Agencies

A number of international airlines have flights to Guatemala City. To find good deals on your plane ticket, we recommend that you inquire at travel agencies that specialize in travel to Latin American countries. For tickets from the United States or Canada to Latin American countries (including Guatemala of course,) we recommend eXito Travel Agency. This agency specializes in low-cost flights to all Latin American countries, and can be reached at [http://www.exitotravel.com], eMail [exito@wonderlink.com], or by phone at 800-655-4053 (from the US). Their staff members all have experience traveling in Latin America and can respond to questions and concerns you may have about your travels.

As a citizen of a country of the European Union, the United States, Canada or Australia you get a Visa upon entering the country. This is normally valid for 90 days.

Women

It is generally safe for women to travel in Guatemala. We advise against travelling on buses at night. Obtrusive Machos can be avoided by talking about your boyfriend or husband who will be back soon.
